Hello, Leonard Waller is my Great Grandfather, Alfred my Great Uncle. I have been trying to find their names on Memorial Rolls and have so far been unsuccessful. Leonard was born in my home town, Westport, and is not on the Gates of Remembrance there. Would you have any idea where they may be listed. They both attested in your area. Thank you. Ken.
Hi Ken,
Neither Leonard nor Alfred Waller are listed on memorials in our local area. It appeared that people sponsored names to be listed on the memorials so not all those who died are necessarily listed.
You will probably have found the Auckland Museum website cenotaph (https://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/record). It has that they are both listed in the Auckland Museum Hall of Honour and respectively Leonard at Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial and Alfred at Etaples Military Cemetery both in France.(https://www.cwgc.org).
It is possible Leonard is remembered on the Morrinsville War Memorial but listed as JL Waller (https://www.morrinsvillemuseum.org.nz/wwi-and-wwii-memorial) he was working in Morrinsville before he enlisted.
You may find if you contact the Te Awamutu Museum they may have information of the soldiers listed on their WW1 memorial.
